LiftBrain Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 20, 2026
LiftBrain is a workout log and planner. This policy explains what it keeps, where it keeps it, and what (if anything) leaves your phone.
THE SHORT VERSION
• Everything you log stays on your phone. There's no account and no server: nothing you enter is uploaded.
• LiftBrain reads from Health Connect only when you allow it, and never writes to it.
• Body weight, injuries and private health settings are kept in a separate store that Android's backup leaves out, so they never leave the phone.
• No ads, no analytics, no tracking, and nothing is sold.
WHAT LIFTBRAIN KEEPS, ON YOUR PHONE
• Workouts, sets, plans, points you've collected, your settings, locations and equipment: kept in the app's storage. Included in Android backup if you have it turned on, so a new phone keeps your history.
• Body weight (weigh-ins you type, and scale readings copied from Health Connect): kept in a separate private store. Never included in Android backup.
• Injuries you enter: kept in the private store. Never included in Android backup.
• Private health settings (pregnancy or postpartum): kept in a separate private file. Never included in Android backup.
• The activity log (rests, notifications and crashes; never body weight): on by default only in test builds, kept for 14 days. Never included in Android backup.
• The Showcase's demo data (a made-up person): kept in its own files and deleted when you leave the Showcase. Never included in Android backup.
Android's backup is run by Google under your Google account's settings; LiftBrain doesn't run a backup service of its own. You can turn Android backup off in your phone's settings.
HEALTH CONNECT
With your permission, LiftBrain reads the following from Health Connect, for these reasons only:
• Heart rate: to show your average and highest heart rate during the workouts you log.
• Exercise sessions: to link a workout your watch recorded to the one you log in LiftBrain, for its heart rate. Your logged times always stay as they are.
• Active and total calories burned: to show the energy used during the workouts you log.
• Weight: for your weigh-in history. Bodyweight exercises count a share of your weight, and The Gap compares it with the weight you lift. Never shared, and never shown in notifications.
• Body fat: to show your latest body-composition reading next to The Gap. Never shared, and never scored.
• Lean mass, bone mass, body water and basal metabolic rate (optional): to show a smart scale's body composition next to The Gap.
• Health data history (optional): to read scale weigh-ins from before you connected, so The Gap starts at your first workout.
Health Connect data is read on your phone and shown in LiftBrain. It is never uploaded, sold or shared, and never used for advertising. LiftBrain never writes to Health Connect.
The use of information received from Health Connect adheres to the Health Connect Permissions policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
WHAT LEAVES YOUR PHONE
• Exercise photos. The "How to" guides load photos from the free-exercise-db project on GitHub. Your phone asks GitHub for the picture, which, like any web request, shows GitHub your IP address. Nothing about you or your training is sent.
• "Watch a video." This opens a YouTube search for the exercise's name (for example, "Goblet Squat proper form") in YouTube or your browser, under YouTube's own privacy policy.
• Research links. In Learn and "Why?", tapping a study opens its page (doi.org or PubMed) in your browser, under that site's own privacy policy. Nothing about you is sent.
• Sharing. Only when you tap Share (for example, to share the activity log), and only to the app you choose. A shared workout carries only its exercises, sets, reps and rest: no weights, and nothing about you. Workouts friends share with you are kept on your phone only ("Shared with me"), and are left out of Android backup.
• Local weather for your sidekick (off unless you turn it on). To show the weather where you are in your sidekick's scene, LiftBrain sends the town name you type to Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) to look it up. It then sends that town's coordinates, rounded to about a kilometer, to ask for the current weather, about once an hour while the app is open. Nothing else is sent with it. The town and the last weather are kept on your phone and left out of Android backup; turning the feature off deletes them. Weather data by Open-Meteo.com (CC BY 4.0).
Nothing else leaves your phone. LiftBrain uses no advertising, analytics or crash-reporting services.
NOTIFICATIONS
Rest timers and the weekly recap show notifications on your phone. They never contain your body weight, anything worked out from it, injuries, or private health information.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
LiftBrain's training suggestions are based on published research, and the app shows its sources. They are general guidance, not medical advice. If you have an injury, are pregnant or postpartum, or have a health condition, follow the advice of a qualified professional.
CHILDREN
LiftBrain is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them. It collects no personal information from anyone, since nothing you enter leaves your phone.
DELETING YOUR DATA
Uninstalling LiftBrain deletes everything it kept on your phone. Android backup copies, if any, are managed in your Google account. Turning off the activity log deletes it, and leaving the Showcase deletes its demo data.
CHANGES TO THIS POLICY
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date, and the app will tell you before anything changes about what leaves your phone.
